World Health Day

07-04-2017

Today it's World Health Day and this year's theme is depression. Did you know that the potato is a very healthy food crop? Today we will go more into detail on this subject and we will make the connection with depression. We will show you that the potato is everybody's friend when it comes to nutritional values.

Potatoes are healthy

The potato is currently the third most important food crop in the world, but is still sometimes mistakenly seen as 'less healthy'. Despite what people think, the potato has a lot to offer; it is a great source of vitamins, fibers, minerals and starch, which gives you energy. Food specialists actually advise people to eat 3 to 5 boiled potatoes per day.

Positive influences of potatoes

The high concentration of vitamin B6 makes the potato a true health product. Vitamin B6 has an important role in our nervous system and even on athletic performances. They are also required for the production of other neurotransmitters that have an important link to depression. For example:

  • serotonin, a lack of which is linked to depression;
  • melatonin, the hormone needed for a good night's sleep;
  • epinephrine and norepinephrine, hormones that help us respond to stress;
  • and GABA, which is needed for normal brain function.

Furthermore, it contains 'kukoamines' compounds that help lowering the blood pressure.

TIP: boiling the potato in the skin with a little water is the best way to maintain the nutritional value of the potato.
